Biography
Independent visual artist Nigel Laxton recently moved from his studio at the Goolugatup Heathcote Cultural precinct in Western Australia, where he worked from 2015 to 2022, and is now based in Sydney, NSW. He obtained the studio in WA after graduating from Curtin University with a Masters’ degree in 2014. Prior to that Nigel had a successful and innovative career as a Materials Scientist/Engineer and he is named as an inventor on over a dozen international patents relating to aerospace and wave energy applications.
Shortly after graduating he was commissioned to produce an artwork for the Luciano Benetton collection, Italy and received the Clyde and Co. Art Award. He has since had three solo exhibitions and been a finalist in numerous local and interstate curated art awards including the Australian Print Triennial and the Fremantle Print Award.
Nigel is inspired by contemporary, ambiguous artworks and this is the main focus of his work. His aim with abstraction is contrary to traditional methods as, instead of starting with something real and representational and abstracting the subject, he starts with something purely abstract and then works it into something concrete that has an identity of its own and is not simply pattern.
